GENERAL POST OFFICE, LONDON,

November 1901.

421,791/01.

Sir,

With reference to the Colonial Office letter of the 16th ultimo (35594/01) I am directed by the Postmaster General to state for the information of Mr. Secretary Chamberlain that careful consideration has been given to the question of what scale of salary would be likely to attract a fair number of suitable candidates of the class desired for the appointment of Examining Supervisor in the Post Office at Hong Kong.

It is considered that the scale hitherto offered, viz. £180 by annual increments of £15 to £240 a year, was too low at the minimum to attract suitable applicants for transfer to Hong Kong, having regard to the large collateral increase of expenditure in respect of house rent and other items in the cost of living which they would incur by the transfer.

The Postmaster General has reason to believe that if the scale were raised to £200 by annual increments of £15 to £245 a year - the increase in the maximum providing for three full increments - a sufficient number of suitable candidates would be obtained and he accordingly suggests this scale for Mr. Chamberlain's consideration.

I am, Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

[...] Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office.
